'Deep sadness' in Offaly town as beloved café announces shock closure
Locals have expressed their disappointment for a beloved cafe in Offaly announced its immediate closure.
Kafe U has become very popular with people in Clara but owners Ken Robinson and Ultan Keena have said that "it is with deep sadness" they announce the closure of the cafe.
"It is with deep sadness that we must announce the closure of our beloved Kafe U Clara with immediate effect. Our Athlone cafe is unaffected," they explained.
"These last 12 months have been the most difficult for us as a hospitality sector with constant rising costs across all areas of the business. The increased vat rate of 4% along with all of the other costs including labour increases, food and energy bills, have made our business no longer viable.
"It is with heavy hearts that we must say goodbye to all our valued and loyal customers. Anyone with vouchers are invited to come use them in our Athlone Kafe U, this will honoured.
"We thank you for all of the memories and laughs down through the 1.5 years that we have traded in Clara and hopefully we will see brighter days ahead but today is a very sad day in our lives and in the lives of our staff. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Ken & Ultan," their statement concluded.
Localy quickly expressed their disappointment and shared well wishes with Ultan and Ken.
One said: "You will be so missed. Thank you for bringing your lovely Cafe to Clara.
Another wrote: "Ah that’s a shame. Great food and lovely helpful staff. You will be missed in Clara for a decent coffee, best of luck lads."
