A MAJOR extension has been approved by the Department of Education for Scoil Shinchill in Killeigh under the Additional School Accommodation (ASA) Scheme.

The approved capital project will consist of a substantial extension to the school, including three Special Education Needs (SEN) classrooms, one additional mainstream classroom and refurbishment works to support the expanded accommodation and enhance existing facilities.

This approval follows on from last week’s announcement that Scoil Shinchill will also benefit from the Climate Action Summer Works Scheme, which will support upgrades aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing the school’s environmental footprint.

The news has been welcomed by local TDs, Tony McCormack and John Clendennen.

Deputy Clendennen noted that the investment reflects the Department’s continued commitment to ensuring that schools have the space and resources needed to support high-quality education for every child.

“Having recently visited the school and met with Principal Sandra Sheeran and the teaching staff, I saw first-hand the urgency and the clear need for this investment. I’ll continue working closely with local Fine Gael councillor, Neil Feighery, the school community and the Department of Education to ensure this vital project progresses without delay.

Deputy McCormack commented: "I’m delighted to confirm approval for much-needed upgrade works and increased capacity for this fantastic school community. Having visited the school recently and met with Principal Sandra Sheeran, the Board of Management and the Parents Council, it was clear how urgently these improvements were needed and how much the students and staff deserve them.

"I’m proud to have worked closely with Minister for Special Education Michael Moynihan and to continue supporting school communities right across Offaly," added the Fianna Fail TD.

Deputy Clendennen said that "the sanctioning of these additional classrooms, particularly the three new SEN rooms, will greatly strengthen the school’s capacity to meet the educational needs of all students. I’m delighted to see this important project move forward.”

“With both the ASA project and the recent Climate Action funding, Scoil Shinchill is entering a period of significant development. These investments will deliver a modern, sustainable and inclusive learning environment for the Killeigh community for years to come,” Deputy Clendennen continued.

“That being said, I am more than aware that there are numerous other school projects across the county that also need to see progress. I am continuing to advocate for and to work with all involved to make advancements,” concluded the Fine Gael TD.
