OFFALY Domestic Violence Support Service (ODVSS) has launched the #RedFlags public awareness campaign across the county as part of the international '16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence' (25 November – 10 December).
Throughout the county, bright red flags will appear on lamp posts, each displaying a different red-flag behaviour commonly seen in unhealthy or abusive relationships. These include tactics such as isolation, financial control, monitoring phones, manipulation, coercive control, and behaviours that make a person feel fearful, trapped, or powerless.
CEO of ODVSS, Anne Clarke, said, “the purpose of the campaign is simple: to help people recognise what abuse can look like long before it escalates. Many people experiencing controlling behaviour do not initially see it as abuse. By placing these messages in public view, we hope to spark reflection, conversation, and early help-seeking”.
ODVSS is inviting the public to get involved directly by "If you see a Red Flag? Take a Photo & Tag Us.

By sharing these images, the community helps amplify the message and raise awareness for others who may be questioning their own relationships. Ms Clarke stated that “Domestic abuse is not always physical, often, the earliest signs appear as subtle changes in behaviour: increased jealousy, pressure, threats, isolation, criticism, or attempts to control money, social life, or independence. These “red flags” frequently precede more severe forms of coercive control and violence. During the 16 Days of Action, ODVSS aims to encourage people to ask themselves an important question:
“Are the behaviours in my relationship healthy, respectful, and equal, or are they red flags?”
Recognising unhealthy behaviour early is key to preventing escalation and empowering victims to reach out safely. Public awareness can be lifesaving. The flags will be visible across towns and villages in Offaly, including Tullamore, Birr, Banagher, and Edenderry. By encouraging residents to share photos on social media, ODVSS hopes to create a county-wide conversation and reduce stigma around speaking about domestic abuse.
