While other European players struggled under the intense pressure being brought by an incredible American comeback, Shane Lowry put together an epic round under the most intense pressure to make sure Europe retained the Ryder Cup.

After a truly incredible day of golf where the American Team looked like they were going to pull off one of the greatest sporting comebacks of all time, it was the Offaly man who held his nerve when all around him were losing theirs to post the all important half point.

Winning putts from Cam Young and Justin Thomas against Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood on the 18th set the comeback in motion while Bryson DeChambeau miraculously came back from five down to snatch a half against Matt Fitzpatrick.

While Ludvig Aberg snatched a crucial point with his win over Patrick Cantlay, John Rahm, Rory McIlroy and Sepp Straka all lost their games leaving all the pressure on Shane Lowry's shoulders. And he delivered.

One down coming down the last to Russell Henley, Shane split the fairway with his drive and followed up with a tremendous approach shot. After Henley left his birdie putt just short, Shane stepped up and rolled in the putt that got Europe to the magic 14 point mark which meant they retained the Ryder Cup.

It sparked massive celebrations and it was capped off shortly afterwards when Tyrell Hatton secured the half point that meant Europe won The Ryder Cup outright.

While most of the focus early in the day was on the top groups, Shane Lowry was putting together a round for the ages against World Number 3 Henley.

Incredibly, under the most intense pressure, Shane shot a bogey free round of five under par but it was his finish that will go down in Ryder Cup history.

Two birdies in the first eight holes left Shane one up but Henley responded and three birdies on 9, 13 and 14 left the American in control as he was now two up with three to play.

But with the Ryder Cup slipping from Europe's grasp, Shane Lowry upped his game to the highest level and finished with three birdies in four holes to seal the all important half point for Europe.

In fact, he played the last five holes in just fifteen shots with five consecutive threes to snatch a half from the jaws of defeat.

While the birdie on 18 will grab all the headlines, his amazing second shot on 15 where he left his ball inside four feet from 174 yards away to win the hole was spectacular.

He followed that up with another perfect iron shot on 16 where he stuck it inside three feet from 170 yards but Henley matched that birdie with a fine approach of his own.

Shane's tee shot on 17 was wayward and he ended up on the bottom tier of the large green but his two putt from over 50ft was assured and brought the match down the last.

His celebration on the 18th will be shown time and time and time again ahead of the next Ryder Cup showdown between Europe and America in Adare Manor in Limerick in two years time.
