The Penneys entrance in Laois Shopping Centre, Portlaoise.
Primark has confirmed long awaited progress to expand a Penneys store in the Midlands is underway. The expansion in Portlaoise is expected to double the workforce, meaning up to 90 new jobs.
Penneys in Portlaoise is smaller and offers a more limited range than other Penneys in Ireland. Now work has finally begun this September that will double the size of the store.
Penneys has given an update and a timeline for when the new shop will open.
Fintan Costello is Head of Penneys Ireland and Northern Ireland.
"We’re delighted to share that construction works have begun on our Portlaoise store. The works are happening in small sections of the store at nighttime, so our customers can still enjoy shopping as normal during the day. The store is set to double in size, and we expect the project to be finished early next year.
"We can’t wait to welcome everyone into a much bigger and better Penneys store here in Laois,” Mr Costello said.
It is five years since Laois County Council first approved the doubling in size of Penneys Portlaoise in Laois Shopping Centre.
Last July Primark gained the latest approval for an altered version of the expansion.
Laois Shopping Centre itself is also undergoing a major alteration to its facade and entrance.
