A contract is expected to be awarded soon for work on one of the worst roads in Offaly.

Under the contract, 1.9km of the R400 between Rhode and Rochfortbridge will be rebuilt but at €1.6 million, it won't be cheap.

Tender documents required contractors to use a geosynthetic solution for the road because of the underlying peat.

The reconstruction will involve the removal of existing pavement layers and the installation of the specially engineered foundation suitable for soft ground.

The stretch of road where the work will take place runs from Knockdrin and Derryiron townlands towards the border with Co Westmeath.

The R400 peat pilot tender was published by Offaly County Council on August 14 last and bids were due by September 3. The contract is scheduled to be awarded on September 24.
