'Does not meet the high standard required' - Plans for new mural in Tullamore on hold

Plans for a new mural in a prominent position in Tullamore have been put on hold as Offaly County Council says it 'does not meet the high standard required of the site'.

Permission had been sought to paint the mural above on the gable wall of an existing dwelling at Bury Quay/Columcille St in Tullamore by Tullamore Tidy Towns.

Offaly County Council has sought further on the plans and was blunt in its assessment.

Seeking the information, Offaly County Council stated: "It is noted that the proposal is an extremely prominent site and the proposal mural may become synonymous with the visual identity of Tullamore. It is therefore considered that a development of the highest visual standard is required. While the design of the proposal has considerable merit it is the view of the Planning Authority that it does not meet the high standard required of the site. The Planning Authority consider that the proposed mural is visually cluttered with numerous subjects which will detract the eye from the existing vista and architecture located along Columcille Street."

Offaly County Council has invited Tullamore Tidy Towns to submit a revised design and suggested that they should consider a design from 'a distinguished, well-known visual artist as this may increase the media attention given towards the final proposal and its success'.

Offaly County Council has also sought information on how the mural will be maintained in the future.
