Young Offaly star crowned All Ireland Poc Fada Champion
A young Offaly star has claimed a National Poc Fada title in the Cooley Mountains on Bank Holiday Monday.
St Cillian's Siofra Ginty was of four competing in the Under 16 Camogie All Ireland Final.
She had already won the Offaly and Leinster titles already this year.
In windy conditions in the Cooley Mountains in Louth, Siofra came out on top to claim the All Ireland title.
Kilcormac-Killoughey hurling star Cillian Kiely was second in the senior mens' event. Trying to regain the title that he won in 2018 and 2019, Kiely took 25 pucks to get around the course in high winds, the same as the winner, Limerick's Colin Ryan and third placed, former Kerry and now Kilkenny hurler, Fionan Mackessy, who was chasing his third title in a row.
The placings were determined by measuring how far the sliotar goes after it crosses the first turning point on the course, as well as how far it goes beyond the finish line. Ryan had 60.7 metres added on, Kiely had 47 metres and Mackessy came third with 35 metres.
Kiely is an annual competitor at this event and was very close to winning another national title – he has been battling injuries this year and didn't play for Kilcormac-Killoughey in their first championship game.
