THE death has taken place of Paddy Hughes, Arden Road, Tullamore, a former Managing Director of Bord na Mona.

A native of Kilcavan, County Laois, Mr Hughes joined Bord na Mona in 1959 where he spent the next 49 years of his life.

He began his career as a stoker's clerk and in 1972 he moved to the transport and quality areas of the business. He was later put in charge of the sod peat works in Timahoe, Kildare and subsequently he was appointed Managing Director.

Mr Hughes died at St James Hospital in Dublin on Monday June 30.

Condolences have been pouring in with Sean Fleming TD expressing his sympathy: ''My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time. May Paddy Rest in Peace.''

One sympathiser described Mr Hughes as ''a great manager and leader in Bord na Mona as well as being a very decent person. He had a huge influence on the development and success of BnM and was highly respected by the workforce, public representatives and customers.''

Paddy Hughes is survived by his wife Sadie, his children Majella, Conor, Paddy, and Cathal, his daughters-in-law Gillian, Paula, Deirdre and Majella’s partner Seamus, and his adored grandchildren Nicole, Christopher, Isobelle, Charlie, Daisy, Paddy, and John.
