UPDATE: Offaly bog fire significantly diminished but smoke will persist in coming days

A bog fire in Offaly has been significantly diminished but people in the area have been warned that smoke will persist in the coming days.

Offaly Fire Service was alerted to a large outdoor fire in bog lands near Walsh Island at 5pm on Sunday

Units from Edenderry and Tullamore and a unit from Portarlington responded along with the Offaly Rostered Senior Fire Officer.

Bord na Mona were also in attendance with machinery clearing fire breaks.

All personnel left the scene at 10:30pm with the fire significantly diminished.

Bord na Mona will attend the scene again today with machinery to gain access where it is not possible on foot.

The Offaly Fire Service says that those in the area should expect to see smoke today and perhaps in the days ahead depending on weather conditions.

They add that the Fire Service continue to monitor the situation and will work with their colleagues in Bord na Mona.
