Ashling Murphy Four Mile Road Race runners line up at the start line between the Bank of Ireland and the Brewery Tap in Tullamore
“A brilliant day,” commented Ray Muphy after more than 700 people took part in the fourth annual Ashling Murphy Four Mile Road Race in Tullamore earlier today.
Ray, father of 23-year-old schoolteacher Ashling from Blueball who was murdered in 2022 said he was delighted with the support for this year's event.
“It's getting bigger,” he remarked. “And it's a wonderful family day out. It's exactly what Ashling was about. Look at the sunshine that's here today.”
He said the Murphy family were very grateful to the organisers Offaly Athletics, led by Darren Butler and Mary Daly: “They run this and they've brought it to what it is now. It's their good work that has done this and it's very humbling for myself, Kathleen, Amy and Cathal to such a crowd that wants to come to be part of this wonderful event.”
Money raised goes to the Ashling Murphy Memorial Fund which was established for the enhancement and development of traditional Irish arts, culture and heritage among young people.

A group of about 100 walkers took off from the start line on the street at O'Connor Square at 9.45am, followed by over 660 runners at 10am.
The Ashling Murphy Memorial Perpetual Trophy was presented to the first female finisher, Hannah Steeds of Leevale Athletic Club. Sarah Flanagan, Tullamore Harriers, was second in the women's race.
The race winner was Sean Tobin, Clonmel Athletic Club and the first local participant across the finish line was Kevin Minnock, Tullamore Harriers, in third place.
Ashling Murphy was killed on the bank of the Grand Canal at Cappincur, Tullamore on the afternoon January 12, 2022 after completing a day's work at Durrow National School.
Ashling, a graduate of Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, was an accomplished musician, fiddle teacher and camogie player.
In November 2023 Jozef Puska, Lynally Grove, Mucklagh, aged 33 at the time, was convicted of her murder and sentenced to life in prison.
