A clever, new engineering solution has been adopted by Offaly County Council and could be the key to solving the county's long-running peat road problem.

Offaly's vast peat road network is subject to much more rapid deterioration than regular roads. One solution is to cut down through the peat to the firm ground beneath but the cost of doing this is prohibitive.

For years the Councillors have been asking for the introduction of a road building method which would make the roads longer lasting. Now they have finally got their answer and their solution.

Works were recently completed on a Peat Pilot Scheme. This entailed the full road reconstruction of a section of the R400 from Rhode to Rochfortbridge. These works involved excavating 1.75km of road, filling & compacting with pavement types, as well as double surface dressing.

A Council official told a recent meeting of the County Council that the primary goal of this project is to address, “the specific challenges posed by roads built on peat, which can lead to issues like subsidence and unevenness. The scheme involves the clever design of using a number of geo grids (membranes) within different layers of the buildup to strengthen the road and increase its lifespan as the road passes through peat lands. This is a well designed pilot scheme. It means that the road will last ten years longer that it would have if we had used our previous reconstruction methods.”

Cllr John Leahy congratulated all involved with this “marvellous” project. “For years we have complained about our bumpy, uneven bog roads, but we couldn't solve the problem as it was too expensive to dig down to firm ground. This new method of using these geo grids / membranes is a clever way of getting around the problem.”

The R400 is the first road to be reconstructed in this way and Cllr Leahy said he looked foward to many more roads in the county being reconstructed in the same way as the R400 pilot scheme.
