People in Offaly are being warned of the dangers of wildfires as the warm weather continues. The Department of Agriculture has issued a Status Orange Fire Warning due to the dry sunny conditions.
Offaly Gardaí are appealing to people to take care during the warm spell and to heed the fire warning.
“We echo this urgent warning and remind all landowners, residents, and visitors to our countryside that wildfires can start easily and spread rapidly, endangering lives, property, wildlife, and vital habitats,” gardaí stated.
They asked people “not light fires in or near forested or grassy areas – this includes deliberate burning of scrub or waste. Avoid BBQs or outdoor cooking near fields, bogs, or woodland areas. Report suspicious activity or signs of smoke/fire immediately to emergency services – dial 999 or 112.”
In relation to farmers and landowners, gardaí are urging them to ensure firebreaks are in place and machinery is serviced and fire-ready.
Walkers and nature-goers are being asked to leave no trace and to avoid actions that could accidentally spark a blaze.
“Gardaí, Fire Services, NPWS staff, and local volunteers are all on alert. Let’s not add preventable fires to their workload. Let’s protect our beautiful countryside, our communities, and our emergency responders. Stay safe. Stay alert. Act responsibly,” Offaly Gardaí stated.
