Legal Aid refused in case of uninsured Offaly man who claimed he was told he was insured
A man who claimed in court that he had been asked to bring workers to their place of employment by another man was told he would be insured.
Thomas Crosbie (58) of 19A Francis Street, Edenderry, was stopped by Garda Trevor Mullins at Laurencetown, Rhode, on September 10, 2024.
He wasn't in possession of a full driving licence and was told his vehicle would be seized. He had four previous convictions.
Solicitor Aisling Maloney said on the day in question, Mr Crosbie had been asked to bring workers to their place of employment by a Mr Quinn. She said he had been told he would be insured to do so on Mr Quinn's girlfriend's policy.
Judge Andrew Cody asked if Mr Quinn could come to court to give evidence. He told Ms Maloney that Thomas Crosbie was looking at a jail sentence if Mr Quinn did not make an appearance. Ms Maloney said her client would welcome that opportunity.
Judge Cody adjourned the case to May 7.
An application for free legal aid by Ms Maloney was refused by Judge Cody who said Mr Quinn should cover her client's costs.
