Laois Gardaí fined a driver and issued a warning to motorists about parking combustion engined cars in EV charging bays.
“Gardaí in Mountrath wish to remind motorists that parking in an EV charging bay without an electric vehicle is an offence. These spaces are limited and essential for those who need to charge their vehicles.
In this instance, a non-EV vehicle was parked across two charging bays, preventing access to the charging point for an EV driver. This misuse of designated spaces creates unnecessary inconvenience and potential hazards for other road users,” gardaí warned in an online post.
“While Gardaí initially exercised discretion in the enforcement of this offence, incorrect use of these spaces remains an issue. As a result, Fixed Charge Penalty Notices (FCPNs) of €80 are now being issued, including in this case.” gardaí stated.
They asked people to “please park responsibly” and to respect designated EV charging bays.
Meanwhile, Gardaí are urging motorists not to drive under the influence of drink or drugs as celebrations get underway ahead of St Patrick's Day.
Garda across Laois and Offaly have begun operating checkpoints and will continue to closely monitor the roads network over the coming days.
They urged people to enjoy the holiday but not to get behind the wheel if they are under the influence of drink or drugs.
