"A menace on our roads" - Offaly motorist handed eight year ban and suspended prison sentence
A motorist from Edenderry has been disqualified from holding a driving licence for eight years.
Shane Eamon Mooney (25), Killane Drive, Edenderry was stopped by the guards on June 23, 2024 on Saint Mary's Road, Edenderry. He had no insurance. He was also a provisional driver who failed to display 'L' plates and was unaccompanied.
The defending solicitor said his client was employed as a labourer.
Judge Andrew Cody remarked that Mooney had previously been disqualified from driving for four years and therefore couldn't be on the roads when he was stopped on June 23.
“Mr Mooney has a bad record,” remarked the judge. “It is obvious that he is something of a menace on our roads.”
The defending solicitor said his client wished to apologise to the guards and to the court. “He realises how serious this matter is.”
Sergeant Brendan Kearns said the defendant had two previous convictions for no insurance, a conviction for hit and run, and one for drink driving.
Plus the ban, Judge Cody fined the man €700 and imposed a three-month suspended sentence.
