Offaly teen celebrated for powerful advocacy ahead of World Down Syndrome Day

Down Syndrome Ireland’s Offaly branch is gearing up for World Down Syndrome Day on March 21. 

The branch wants you to join them in celebrating their amazing members, including 17-year-old Ailis Malone, who has done incredible work championing inclusion and disability rights. 

Ailis was recognised for her positive contribution to her community and was honoured with an Individual Award Winner at the 2023 Laois Offaly Division Garda Youth Awards.  

Ailis also serves on the Ombudsman for Children’s Office Youth Advisory Panel, where she played a key role in developing “Pieces of Us; What’s Next?” – a report detailing children’s perspectives on critical issues. 

Her dedication even took her to Geneva, Switzerland, to share these findings with the UN.

“Hearing from other people my age about what is important in their lives has been interesting,” said Ailis. “I like to have the chance to put my ideas in my own words, too.”  

The Offaly Down Syndrome Association, a branch of Down Syndrome Ireland, provides a range of essential services to individuals with Down syndrome and their families throughout County Offaly.  

Their services include early intervention programmes, speech and language therapy, social clubs, and more, fostering a community where everyone thrives. 

Join the Offaly Down Syndrome Association this World Down Syndrome Day, March 21, as they celebrate people with Down syndrome all over the world. 

This year’s theme is Support Our Dreams. Everyone has the right to support and the right to dream big. Down Syndrome Ireland needs your help to ensure their members can live the life they’ve always dreamed of.    

The Offaly Down Syndrome Association is also inviting everyone from schools to businesses to participate in their “Rock Your Socks” campaign by wearing colourful socks and sharing photos on social media.
