The new road will link Tanyard and High Street via Roselawn
A new road linking the Tanyard with High Street through Roselawn in Tullamore is set to open on March 3 providing a two way traffic flow.
Following the opening the Tanyard Lane up to O'Connor Square will close for a period of eight weeks to complete the remaining works.
Despite ongoing works, access to Robbins and Oisin O'Sullivans' will remain open with clear signage guiding traffic and pedestrians.
At the February meeting of Tullamore Municipal District, Senior Executive Engineer, Joe Dooley confirmed the new link road will be 6.5 metres wide with a pedestrian crossing at the top of Roselawn. He emphasised that the main goal of the project is to relieve congestion at the corner of Tullamore library which he described as a ''pinch point.''
When completed Mr Dooley said traffic will enter O'Connor Square via Tanyard link. When exiting the square, vehicles can turn right onto Bridge Street or left up High Street.
Pedestrian crossing move draws criticism
Meanwhile, concerns are growing over the relocation of a pedestrian crossing on Convent View. Councillors Declan Harvey and Shane Murray reported that many residents feel the new location which is closer to Kilbeggan Bridge is less safe than its previous position at the adjacent footbridge.
Joe Dooley explained that the shift was necessary because pedestrians were not using the designated crossing and were instead crossing the road at the top of Convent View. He pointed out that an alternative crossing exists near the footbridge further down.
Cllr Harvey argued that this crossing is mainly used by mass-goers and schoolchildren, while the original one served those walking into town.
Other roadworks and greenway
The urban greenway is progressing Mr Dooley reported and is now focused on Kilbride Street. A fallen tree across the canal during Storm Eowyn caused temporary delays. Offaly Street was closed and signage directing access to local businesses was erected.
On Colmcille Street, granite paving will soon begin, and new lighting columns will be installed. A traffic management system will be in place next week, but the road will remain open throughout the period of works.
