Iconic tree planted in 1969 by Eamon de Valera felled by Storm Eowyn

The ‘de Valera’ tree which was planted by Eamon de Valera, then President of Ireland, when he visited Gurteen College in 1969 to mark his visit, came crashing to the ground with storm Éowyn.

Surprisingly, trees which are much older, some almost 150 years, remained standing in the same area.

College Principal Mr. Jonathan Parry is pictured with what’s left of the tree in the ground which he hopes will sprout and grow again.
