BARRY Cowen MEP has been appointed as a shadow rapporteur on agriculture for the Renew Group in the European Parliament.

The appointment was made at the parliament when it had a plenary sitting in Strasbourg last week and when Renew Group (of which Fianna Fail is part) members had two meetings, including one for members of the agriculture committee.

“At the agriculture meeting I was delighted to be appointed as the group's shadow rapporteur on a crucial file concerning CAP and the future of agriculture. It's such a privilege to take on such an important role so early in my term as an MEP and over the coming weeks I'll be engaging extensively with farmers, foresters, agri-innovators and representative bodies as I prepare a position paper on the future of agriculture and the Common Agricultural Policy as part of that file,” said Mr Cowen.

During three days in Strasbourg Mr Cowen also met with representatives from Danone to discuss how large agri-food companies are managing the transition to more sustainable, resilient food systems.

“That night I spoke in the chamber about sustainable tourism, emphasising the need to balance growth ambitions with environmental responsibilities while supporting small and medium enterprises in the tourism sector through this transition,” said Mr Cowen.

“It's a vital industry in my constituency and across Europe. And like the rest of society the sector knows it must play its part in tackling climate change.”

On Wednesday the Offaly man spoke in the chamber again. “I also spoke in the chamber about the importance of mental health in agriculture and the need for stronger commitments in this area. Later I met with the Minister Counsellor with responsibility for Parliamentary Affairs from China's mission to the EU. As global economic conditions shift, and they are shifting, it's vital for Ireland to have plans in place for existing and indeed future trade relationships. “

Before returning home, Mr Cowen, former TD for Laois-Offaly who was elected to the European Parliament in June, wished everyone a happy Christmas.
