A one-way system is to be put in place at Whitehall Bridge in Tullamore

Offaly County Council received just one submission in relation to proposed changes to the layout of the Whitehall Bridge.

The Bridge is a protected structure, Senior Executive Engineer with Offaly County Council, John Connelly speaking at a meeting of Tullamore Municipal District said and ''we want to make sure we are doing it in line with requirements.''

Earlier Councillor Tony McCormack asked if there had been many submissions as he had been receiving a lot of quieries at the door as he canvasses for a Dail seat.

Mr Connelly said the council had received one from Waterways Ireland and they had engaged with them on that.

Work on the Whitehall (Bury) Bridge will be carried out in conjunction with the National Transport Authority (NTA) and will include new kerbing and footpaths on the L-2023-1 at Convent Road and Whitehall Bridge.

The carriageway on the Bridge will be narrowed in order to accommodate one-way vehicular traffic. The junction at St Brigid's Place and Convent Road will be tightened and three controlled pedestrian crossings will be introduced on Daingean Road and Convent Road.

An uncontrolled crossing will be put in place on the junction of Whitehall Bridge and Daingean Road. There will be signage and lining, indicating one-way traffic.

The Whitehall Bridge is used by many pedestrians and students attending the Sacred Heart School and Tullamore College.
