Gardaí probe alleged arson attack in the Midlands as cars also come under attack

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances behind an alleged arson attempt on a car in the Midlands just hours before a number of others were targeted.

Detectives launched the probe after fire crews put out a blaze that saw a car in a residential estate in Edgeworthstown in Longford go on fire shortly after midnight on Sunday morning.

The fire itself, is now being treated as suspicious with a full garda investigation now in full swing.

“Gardaí are investigating an incident of suspected criminal damage by fire in Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford, in the early hours of Sunday 1st October 2023,” said a garda spokesperson.

“The fire service extinguished the fire.

“There were no reports of injuries. Investigations are ongoing.”

Meanwhile, a number of cars were also damaged in an apparent act of vandalism along the Richmond Street area of Longford Town on Sunday afternoon.

As our photographs show, each of the cars targeted had their windscreens smashed in.

It is understood that while gardaí are aware of the incident, no statement of complaint has been made.
