The SHS students who reached the final of the Trocaire competition

Five TY students from the Sacred Heart School in Tullamore have reached the National Final of the Trocaire Game Changers competition.

Game Changers is a programme for young people who want to learn about issues affecting our world today. The competition encourages young people to engage with global justice issues by creating either board, card or digital games. It is open to young people from primary, post primary and youth settings.

As part of the competition, participants engage in workshops with Trocaire representatives to explore what global justice means and to introduce them to game design techniques. Students then design their own games exploring global justice issues, such as climate change, gender equality or conflict and enter it into the competition.

There were over 200 entries to the post primary competition this year and games were judged under the criteria of understanding, empathy, innovation and effort. The SHS boardgame entitled “Climb It” is one of only eight games shortlisted for the final of the post primary category.

They have now been invited to showcase their game at the final in the Helix in DCU on May 22.
