Action from Cappincur and Daingean. Picture Ger Rogers
CAPPINCUR kicked 14 second half wides as they played out an entertaining 0-13 each draw on Sunday afternoon, in what was a heated enough clash between the two rivals.
Tullamore Court Hotel Offaly Senior B Football Championship Round 4
Cappincur 0-13
Daingean 0-13
Cappincur will feel that they’ve left behind a victory following this clash with Daingean, as Ger Lynam’s side kicked 14 second half wides in their draw, and will feel a small bit disappointed not to have taken home the maximum amount of points despite being down by six at half time.
Daingean were the much stronger side during the opening 30 minutes as they played all the football and were fast with their forward passing and their shooting was excellent. Three two pointers were kicked by Daingean in the first half, with their entire full forward consisting of Odhran Connolly, Cian Reilly and Jack Connolly obliging with those duties. Jamie Hayes was having a great game in the half forward line, with Adam Bolger and Steven Joyce also showing great pace and tenacity with the ball and setting up attacks for their side.
Eoin Carroll was performing for his side and was attempting to pull his side back into the contest, as was Jason Gethings, as the full forward had two fisted attempts at goal saved on the line by Conor Curley to prevent his side from conceding.
Neither side were kicking wides during the first period which was a good sign of their shooting, but it was Daingean creating more opportunities as well as looking the most likely to score as the half progressed.
They held a 0-11 to 0-5 lead at the break, but Cappincur did have the wind in the second half, and they started off very strong as Bill Carroll, who was introduced at half time kicked his side’s first two pointer from a free after 32 minutes, to reduce the gap to four.
Really, it was only one side playing the football in the second half, as Eoin Carroll was winning all the kickouts, and was forcing his side forward at every opportunity, but while Ger Treacy reduced the gap on 36 minutes, there was a sense of regret seeping in as Cappincur began to kick some very uncharacteristic wides and weren’t taking the chances that you’d expect them too.
Daingean will be disappointed themselves that in the second half, they only scored 0-2, thanks to Shane Marsden and Shane Tierney, with his point with four minutes to go looking like it would be enough to seal victory, but they never got the ball down their end of the field again. Cappincur began to kick more and more wides, with the game not seeing a score from the 42nd minute until the 56th minute, and during that time, wides were being kicked like there was no tomorrow, which was unfortunate from Cappincur’s perspective given how well they were working possession.
They did eventually come up with the necessary scores to grab themselves a point, with Sean Graham and a Sean Courtney point which was initially a shot at goal, that was tipped over the bar by Conor Curley and made it a draw game but neither side could find the late spark to get over the line, as both will have to settle for just a point.
