LATEST: Offaly gardai issue update following tragic house fire in Edenderry

Gardai investigating a fatal house fire in Edenderry earlier this week have confirmed a post mortem examination has been completed.

The body of a man - named locally as Christopher 'Crunchie' Holt - was found inside the property at Castleview Park in the town -  hours after a fire broke out at the semi-detached house in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

While gardai have not released the results of the post-mortem for operational reasons, it's understood foul play is not suspected  and that a file will now be prepared for the local coroner.

Technical examinations have been carried out at the house in Edenderry and gardai say they are investigating “all the circumstances” of the fire that claimed Mr Holt's life.

Tuesday's incident happened at the same house where four-year-old Tadhg Farrell and his great-aunt Mary Holt were murdered following a petrol-bomb attack in December 2025. Christopher Holt was a brother of Mary Holt.

The young boy’s grandmother also received hospital treatment for serious burn injuries following last year's fire.

In January, a man in his late 20s was arrested and questioned on suspicion of murder but was later released without charge in January.

Investigations into that incident are also ongoing.
