Did you hear that? Barbara Tierney (Sr Augusta), Andrew Dagg (Paul), Maria Maher (Sally) Fiona O’Brien (Sr Philemena). Have they spilled the beans??
THIS year, Rathcabbin Players celebrate their 40th anniversary and to help them with the celebrations, they have chosen a two act laugh out loud comedy ‘Drinking Habits’, which will be staged in Rathcabbin Hall from Thursday January 30th to Sunday February 2nd inclusive.
The play centres around a group of nuns in a small convent in a small town where some of the nuns are up to something….and it’s not praying!
However, all is not as you may be thinking as accusations, mistaken identities, and romances run wild in this traditional, laugh-out-loud farce.
Paul (Andrew Dagg) and Sally (Maria Maher) are not who they say they are but who are they??? They are looking for a good story and they decide to land at the convent doors. They go undercover as a nun and priest, but their presence, combined with the addition of a new nun, spurs paranoia throughout the convent that spies have been sent from Rome to shut them down.
Mother Superior (Marguerite Walsh) has no idea what is happening in her convent of the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing, as Sr Mary Catherine (Catherine Burke), Sr Augusta (Barbara Tierney) and Sr Philomena (Fiona O’Brien) hatch a plan to keep the convent open.
Wine and secrets are inevitably spilled as everyone tries to preserve the convent and reconnect with lost loves. Add in Fr Chinelle (Hubert Hogan) and George the gardener (Pat Kennedy) and this play gets a touch of madness that will sure to keep the audience laughing straight through.
This is a delightful comedy and acted out only like the Rathcabbin Players can do. It is sure to supply a good laugh and is highly recommended.
Also helping the group to celebrate their 40th Anniversary is play producer Paul Spencer who is producing in Rathcabbin for the first time. Paul has been involved with the stage since 1982 and has taken roles in many plays and musicals since then including directing in Killavilla, Kinnitty and Coolderry. He is delighted to be with Rathcabbin Players who have a long and accomplished history.
Playwright Tom Smith has written several plays including The Odyssey, Dangerous, Marguerite’s Secret Diaries to name just a few. A university professor, he has won several awards down through the years for his stage plays.
Rathcabbin Player would like to extend thanks to sponsors Hire Agri, Gill Agri Contractors, Rathcabbin, and Brenda at Print Plus, Tullamore.
The play goes on stage in Rathcabbin Hall (R42 Y188) from Thursday January 30th to Sunday February 2nd. Doors open 7.15pm – Curtains at 8pm. Admission €10. Booking is essential by phone/WhatsApp/ text message to (087) 216 4511 between 6pm and 8pm daily from Thursday January 23rd.
