The case was heard at Tullamore District Court
A MOTORIST was charged with committing a driving offence in an Offaly village during last week's sitting of Tullamore Court.
Garda Patrick McGee told the court that on September 18, 2024, he was present on the N80 in Killeigh, when he saw Evan McMorrow, Cloonfad, Oldtown, Athlone, Co. Roscommon, “attempting a wheelspin on the road while black smoke was coming out of his exhaust.” He also had no driving licence, no insurance and no NCT cert.
Sgt Brendan Kearns said Mr McMorrow had 22 previous convictions all for road traffic matters, including no insurance, no driving licence and dangerous driving. All 22 offences happened on three separate dates.
The defending solicitor Brian Duffy said it was a very poor history of many convictions but he urged the Judge to give his client a chance.
"He is currently doing a mechanic apprenticeship and there's possibly some light at the end of the tunnel.”
Judge Cody pointed out that this was the defendant's fourth offence for no insurance.

“He is a danger to society. He is a thundering disgrace, driving around in this frightening way with tinted windows. I also had to issue a bench warrant for his arrest because of a non appearance in court.”
The defending barrister David Nugent said his client wasn't “doing doughnuts” in Killeigh. He said his client is doing his first year of a mechanic apprenticeship course.
Mr Nugent pointed out that his client is taking the matter seriously and he urged the Judge to give McMorrow a chance.
“He knows he was acting stupidly and he wants to turn things around. He has a good employer who wants to see him do well. Sending him to prison would serve no decent good. I think everyone deserves a second chance.”
Judge Andrew Cody remanded the defendant in custody for a week. “Next week I want to see his work references before I sentence.”
