WATCH: Heavy snow showers falling across parts of Offaly with bitterly cold wind blowing showers through

Heavy snow showers are continuing to fall across parts of the country with bitterly cold wind blowing showers through.

According to the latest Met Eireann weather forecast, it will be very cold this morning with icy stretches possible on untreated surfaces. There will be sunny spells and scattered showers of sleet, snow and hail and the potential for isolated thunderstorms. Through the afternoon and evening, the snow showers will become mainly confined to high ground. It will be a windy day with fresh to strong west to southwest winds, potentially turning stormy for a time this afternoon on the northwest and north coast. Highest temperatures of just 4 to 7 degrees, but feeling colder due to wind chill.

According to Met Eireann, tonight there will be clear spells and scattered showers of rain or sleet. By morning there will just be isolated showers in the northeast and largely dry conditions everywhere else. It will be cold with minimum temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees generally, so frost and ice is possible. Breezy early in the night with fresh and gusty westerly winds but winds will gradually ease light to moderate overnight.
