Zofia Piet and Maurycy Tkaczyk, with their new Tandem Control-IQ insulin pump systems at the Regional Hospital Mullingar
Two Tullamore younsters, Zofia Piet and Maurycy Tkaczyk, became the first patients
with Type 1 diabetes, outside of Dublin, to start on the new Tandem Control-IQ insulin pump system at the Paediatric Diabetes service in the Regional Hospital Mullingar.
The system which automatically adjusts insulin to reduce both high and low-blood sugars works on information from a Dexcom glucose monitor, worn on the skin.
This represents a significant step forward for the once beleaguered diabetes service which shut temporarily in 2021 due to lack of staff.
