Offaly youngsters with type 1 diabetes benefit from new insulin pump system

Two Tullamore younsters, Zofia Piet and Maurycy Tkaczyk, became the first patients 

with Type 1 diabetes, outside of Dublin, to start on the new Tandem Control-IQ insulin pump system at the Paediatric Diabetes service in the Regional Hospital Mullingar. 

The system which automatically adjusts insulin to reduce both high and low-blood sugars works on information from a Dexcom glucose monitor, worn on the skin.

This represents a significant step forward for the once beleaguered diabetes service which shut temporarily in 2021 due to lack of staff.
