The palliative care inpatient unit in Tullamore remains a named priority

The Minister is committed to having the facility at Arden Lane in Tullamore

Fine Gael TD for Offaly, Deputy John Clendennen has reaffirmed the commitment from Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill that the development of a new specialist palliative care inpatient unit in Tullamore remains a named priority in this year’s HSE National Service Plan and Capital Plan.

The Minister confirmed that the €20 million Government investment announced in 2022 will deliver a 20-bed hospice at Arden Lane, Tullamore, providing specialist inpatient, day care, outpatient, and community palliative care services for patients and families across the Midlands. The Arden Lane site was selected as the most feasible following a structured appraisal, with planning permission lodged in April 2025 and a decision anticipated shortly.

Deputy Clendennen said ''This is a hugely important project for the people of Offaly and the wider Midlands region. The Minister has made it absolutely clear that the Tullamore hospice is not only funded but prioritised at national level, and that the Government is determined to see it delivered. The HSE’s response to Further Information on the planning application is imminent and will be addressed in a timely way, following meaningful engagement with local residents and stakeholders to take achievable local requests into account.''

Minister Carroll MacNeill also noted that hospice builds are being advanced in Cavan, Drogheda and Tullamore, in line with the National Adult Palliative Care Policy. When completed, every region of the country will have access to a dedicated hospice. The Government has committed over €184 million to palliative care services in 2025, representing a 15% increase on 2024, and a 50% increase since 2020.

''This investment will ensure that families in Offaly and across the Midlands have access to the highest standards of end-of-life care, close to home. I will continue to work with the Minister, the HSE, and local stakeholders to see this hospice delivered without delay, so that it can begin serving the community as soon as possible,'' concluded Deputy Clendennen.
