ABOVE is the first look at the early sketches for a mural which is proposed for a building in Tullamore.

Tullamore Tidy Towns Assocition is seeking planning approval to paint the mural on the side/gable wall of a dwelling located at Bury Quay.

The painting depicts various landmarks around the town including Charleville Castle, Boland's Lock House, Srah Castle and more.

Chair of Tullamore Tidy Towns Association Councillor Shane Murray says ''we painted the wall last year, but with the work on the bridge complete it's looking a bit tired again. The artist will be local and has already been chosen.''

The application is with Offaly County Council and a date of August 18 has been given for a decision.

Adjudicating in the Tidy Towns Competition will take place soon. Tullamore has a strong record in the competition and won its 10th consequetive gold medal in last year's event.

The competition involves participating areas being rated on all aspects of their local environment and prizes awarded to the best under many different categories. The overall winner is “Ireland’s Tidiest Town”. which is announced at a national ceremony in September each year.

Last year the adjudicators described Tullamore as a ''handsome town with many fine Georgian and Victorian buildings throughout.'' The report continued, ''many of the townhouses are occupied and kept beautifully, though it would be great to see the vacant properties renovated and brought back to life soon. Your streetscape has been enhanced in recent years, with a new example being the landscaped planted beds along O’ Moore Street/Spollanstown Junction, near the Tullamore Court Hotel. The footpaths, planting schemes and street furniture really enhance the streetscape and help to set off the historical buildings.''
