Newly widened stretch opens on Tullamore's urban greenway
A newly widened footpath and cycleway at Kilbride Park, is now finished and open to the public. The work is part of the Grand Canal Urban Greenway.
The greenway runs through Tullamore from Convent View to Cox's Bridge and the 28th lock to Sragh Bridge.
Offaly County Council says the urban greenway is the final piece of works and combines two elements of previous projects carried out by the Council, namely the Tullamore Public Realm Enhancement scheme and the Offaly Grand Canal Greenway.
To date the works have included widening of footpaths along the canal bank, undergrounding of cables and street enhancement, new paving and kerbs, road realignment, resurfacing and relining, traffic calming features, signage and lighting.
The greenway will cover a distance of 70 kilometres and ''are an integral part of the proposed Greenway link from the Grand Canal Dock Dublin to Shannon Harbour in West Offaly.''
It is hoped that when the works are complete it will strengthen Offaly's tourism.
''Both new and returning visitors to Tullamore will experience a wealth of attractions, enhanced public realm features while also being an enhanced amenity for local users,'' says Offaly County Council.
