Tullamore based Fianna Fail Dail Deputy, Tony McCormack TD has called for urgent action to address what he describes as one of the most serious challenges facing children and families today — staying safe in an increasingly digital world.

Highlighting growing concerns about the impact of unmonitored smart devices, social media, and online gaming, Deputy McCormack is urging stronger supports for parents, schools, and communities to protect young people online.

“As both a parent and a public representative, I see first-hand how difficult it is for families to keep up with the risks children face on phones, tablets, and gaming platforms,” he said. “We need to take this seriously — it’s about mental health, education, and overall wellbeing.”

Deputy McCormack is advocating for a collaborative national response that includes:

Clear, accessible guidance for parents on how to manage device use at home;

Increased resources in schools to help children build digital resilience;

Stronger regulation around harmful content and online interactions;

Continued investment in cyber safety education and public awareness.

He also welcomed the ongoing work of national bodies such as the Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau and media regulators in addressing online threats but stressed that the pace of change online requires constant vigilance.

“We can’t afford to fall behind. Our children deserve to grow up in a safe and supportive online environment. That means empowering parents and educators, and ensuring government policy keeps pace with technology.”

Deputy McCormack said he will continue to engage with experts and stakeholders on this issue and says he will push for greater national focus on online safety measures in the months ahead.
