Tullamore RFC kicked off their All-Ireland League Division 2C campaign with a home match against Ballyclare RFC. This was an eagerly anticipated game, as Tullamore fielded no fewer than seven debutants, leaving supporters unsure of what to expect from the relatively fresh lineup.
AIL Division 2C, Round 1:
Tullamore RFC 14
Ballyclare RFC 29
The new coaching ticket of Dave Hanlon and Aidan Wynne had been building nicely for this tie and the energy in the air was palpable, with a blend of optimism and cautious curiosity as fans gathered to witness how the new-look team would fare.
Tullamore wasted no time making an impact on the game, thanks to one of their debutants, Josh Huddlestone. In the opening minutes, Huddlestone demonstrated his immense potential, breaking through Ballyclare's defensive line with ease and executing a stunning individual effort. He dashed past several defenders before touching down under the posts, giving Tullamore an early 7-0 lead after the successful conversion. The crowd erupted with excitement, as this was the perfect start for the home side.
However, as the first half progressed, Ballyclare capitalised on a few unforced errors by Tullamore. A series of misjudgements and missed tackles allowed the visitors to gain the upper hand. Ballyclare managed to score the next three tries, exploiting gaps in Tullamore’s defence and overturning the early deficit. With clinical finishing, Ballyclare took a commanding 12-point lead, which left the Tullamore players and supporters somewhat deflated as half-time approached.
Despite the setback, Tullamore refused to fold. Just before the half-time whistle, Conor Dunne injected some much-needed life back into the game. Starting from from the 10-metre line, Dunne showcased his pace and vision, embarking on a scintillating run that left the Ballyclare defence flat-footed. His blistering pace saw him glide past several defenders, and he finished under the posts to bring Tullamore back within striking distance. The try was converted, leaving Tullamore trailing by just 5 points as the teams headed into the break with the score at 14-19.
In the second half, Tullamore came out firing, determined to make up the deficit. They created several golden opportunities to take the lead, with chances presenting themselves through their dynamic backline and forward play. Unfortunately, a series of missed chances and handling errors saw Tullamore squander some promising scoring positions. By the 65-minute mark, they had several opportunities to put themselves ahead, but the elusive breakthrough remained just out of reach.
As the clock ticked down, Ballyclare held firm defensively, and with only minutes remaining, they delivered the killer blow. A late try from Ballyclare extended their lead and effectively sealed the victory, leaving Tullamore’s valiant effort unrewarded on the scoreboard. The final whistle blew with Ballyclare emerging victorious, but the narrow margin of defeat didn’t tell the full story of the game.
Tullamore’s performance, despite the loss, was filled with promise, particularly considering the number of new faces in the squad. Standout performances came from the likes of Josh Huddlestone, whose early try lit up the game. Karl Dunne and Scott Bradley had commanding games in the backfield, showing great aerial and kicking skills throughout. Conor Dunne’s electrifying breakaway try was another highlight, giving Tullamore hope right up to the end.
A special mention must go to Kalvin Mahon, who earned the Man of the Match award for his tireless work rate and commitment, leading from the front and inspiring his teammates throughout the contest.
While the final scoreline favoured Ballyclare, the men in red and black can hold their heads high. Their performance in this opening round showed immense potential, and with some fine-tuning and lessons learned from this match, Tullamore look set to be strong contenders in the weeks ahead.
