A popular Offaly politician was joined by family and friends to celebrate on the double recently.

A popular Offaly politician was joined by family and friends to celebrate on the double recently.

Independent councillor Sean O'Brien is pictured blowing out the candles on the cake to mark his 70th birthday flanked by his wife, Maureen, and other family members.

Cllr O'Brien was also celebrating his successful re-election to Offaly County Council in last June's local elections.

It is believed that the night - held in John Lee's public house - was a very enjoyable affair with revellers partying into the early hours.

The veteran left-wing Independent was the third councillor to be elected in the Tullamore area in the local elections count held in Mucklagh.

The Carlow native and long-time Tullamore resident increased his vote by a massive 47 per cent since the 2019 local elections and was certain to be elected once the first count figures were announced.

Speaking to the Tribune following his election Cllr O'Brien said a lot of issues had been raised on the doorsteps during his canvass by the people of the Tullamore Municipal District.

“As elected councillors we now have to go and deliver for the people and bring our town and county back up,” he pointed out.
