Barnsley come from behind to knock out South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham

Barnsley progressed to the third round of the Carabao Cup after coming from behind to beat South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham 2-1 at Oakwell.

A first goal in Rotherham colours for Ar’jany Martha was cancelled out by Jon Russell in the second half, before Adam Phillips scored the winner with 22 minutes to play.

Shaun McWilliams almost opened the scoring for the Millers in the 10th minute but his effort was saved by Murphy Cooper, before Kion Etete saw his rebound cleared off the line by Tykes defender Connor Barratt.

Rotherham took the lead in the 19th minute after Martha skipped past Mael de Gevigney and fired a rocket into the bottom right corner.

The away side hit the crossbar at the start of the second half as Cooper tipped McWilliams’ strike on to the woodwork.

Barnsley equalised in the 59th minute as Nathanael Ogbeta’s cross was turned in by Russell at the near post.

It was then the host’s turn to hit the frame of the goal as Jonathan Bland’s effort from 20 yards struck the outside of a post.

Substitute Phillips completed the turnaround in the 68th minute after turning home Neil Farrugia’s pull back inside the penalty area.
