Offaly man coaches Athlone school to historic rugby success

A BANAGHER man has led Marist College in Athlone to a historic and rare rugby success. The famous school captured the Connacht A Senior Schools Cup recently – it was their first win in 12 years and only their fourth in the long 113 history of this prestigious competition.

The team manager and coach i9s Shane Broderick, a Banagher man who played rugby in Birr in the 2010s.

Schools rugby is dominated by private run institutions and Marist College and their manager were thrilled with this success.

They lost the last two finals to Sligo Grammar but finally got the better of their great rivals, edging out a thrilling decider by 33-29 in Ballina.
