A REMARKABLE successful fundraiser by Kilcormac-Killoughey GAA Club has shot past €100,000, almost up to €110,000 at the time of writing.
The Offaly senior hurling champions held a sponsored 5k walk in Lough Boora last Sunday with the success of the fundraiser surpassing their wildest expectations.
At the time of writing on Tuesday morning, the figure was €109,406 and it will probably reach €110,000 before the fundraising portal is shut down.
The walk had been organised to get in much needed funds as Kilcormac-Killoughey won the Offaly Senior Hurling Championship and embarked on a Leinster club campaign that was ended by O'Loughlin Gaels in the semi-final.
They also won the Senior “B”, U-20 and U-15 Hurling Championships in 2023 as well as the Junior Football Championship. Ironically the walk took place just days after club chairman Joe Slevin and secretary Paul Craven had stood down at their Annual General Meeting and they couldn't elect replacements – a new chairperson, secretary, vice chairperson and children's officer will be appointed by the incoming committee.
When they launched the fundraiser, Kilcormac-Killoughey could not have anticipated the momentum it would generate. Using the tried and tested Club Faithful fundraising portal where donations are made online and social media is used to promote the venture, they had over €10,000 collected within hours.
It grew at great speed after that, surpassing €50,000 within a week and as the figure continued to climb daily, the club set a target of €100,000. Towards the end of last week, it was clear that this would be reached and it was duly passed on Saturday morning and money continued to flood in after that.
98 participants were nominated to collect money with Justin Mahon raising the most, €6,770 followed by Keith Screeney, father of star senior hurlers Jack and Adam, on €6,035. Thomas Bracken got €5,825, Tommy Kilmartin €5,027, James Buckley €3,400, former club chairman Brendan Mahon €3,355 and Mike Kelly €3,190.
Several more got in from €1,000 upwards and the fundraiser showed what can be achieved by a club going well and able to generate momentum and enthusiasm among its members.
The club did not ask players to collect money, leaving them to concentrate on their main role of preparing for and winning games but the wider community in the parish have certainly showed their appreciation in very generous terms.
