5 clever storage ideas for your home
Whether its toys, clothes or products and utensils, we all struggle to find suitable storage in our homes. There are only so many shelves you can hang; wardrobes you can construct, or plastic boxes you can fill and find a spot for. We all need clever ideas to save space and free our homes of unwanted clutter.
Decluttering is probably the first way to save space in your home and reduce the need for storage, and the secret to this is ruthlessness. As Marie Kondo says, if it doesn't bring you joy, get rid of it.
But there are, however, limits to this technique; you may be in a situation where there is stuff you just have to keep, and after all, you can't throw out all the kids toys or banish all your summer clothes to a skip.
There are always solutions, even for the smallest of homes, to hide away this stuff and keep your home free from clutter without compromising on space. Here are some simple things you can do:
Use your stairs!
So many houses have a redundant space underneath the stairs. While this area can often attract stuff like shoes, bikes, toys and so on, it is worth investing in a more permanent solution. The example here is inexpensive and can actually make the area underneath your stairs an attractive feature of your home, while also giving you vital storage space. The baskets are also handy for things you don't really want people to see like footwear.
Get an ottoman in your life!
An ottoman is an attractive extension of your existing furniture and therefore will not look out of place. The example here is in a bedroom and is perfect for hiding literally everything, from scatter cushions to blankets, clothes, shoes and small appliances. Take the same idea to your living space and you can have a storage box, coffee table and footstool all rolled into one snazzy piece of furniture.
You need these vacuum-pack bags in your life. Storing seasonal clothing, spare duvets or other bulky materials like garden furniture cushions can be hard to store. You don't want to risk leaving them in a shed and the attic is already full, let's be honest! These bags can reduce the space needed to store such items and by flattening them, make it instantly easier to find a home for them in your home like under a bed for example.
Genius! How many of you have shampoo bottles, soap and all sorts falling on top of you every time you open the bathroom cabinet? There's a surprising amount of products needed in a bathroom and usually very little space, at least in ordinary two or three-bed family homes. Shelving units like this one can fit in even the smallest space beside your toilet or sink and offer amazing space saving solutions. They also blend into your decor and take unsightly clutter out of view.
The cable hub...
This won't save you an awful lot of space but it will spare you a major headache. Cables from TVs, consoles, lamps, etc are a nightmare strewn about the floor. These hubs are brilliant for hiding the unsightly cables and you will be surprised how much floor space they will free up. There are also model with compartments to store chargers so they are also where you actually need them, saving you the frantic search all over the house.
