“Playing Our Part for a Sustainable Future” is the title of a seminar, which takes place on Saturday, November 25 at 2pm in St Mary's Youth Centre, Tullamore

Why this event now? Offaly County Council have published a Draft Climate Action Plan for 2024-2029 and are looking for the public to engage with them and make submissions before December 6, this event will give people the opportunity to do just that.

Liam Walsh, Green Party candidate, in the Tullamore area in next year's local elections, said he believed this Climate Action Plan for Offaly “will give us all an opportunity in a practical way to look at becoming climate resilient, biodiversity rich, environmentally sustainable and create a carbon neutral economy”

He went on to say: “It is time now that we listen to each other, we talk about change, how we can be practical on a daily basis and learn more about what a sustainable future might look like.”

This series of bite size talks will focus on the day to day practical things we can do to make our towns and villages more sustainable.

This event will focus on Food Waste (Niamh Dooley, Co-Founder of local company BiaSol), how we can Reduce -Reuse -Recycle products (Paul Houlihan, Manager Oxfam Store Tullamore)and how and why we should retrofit homes (John Kelly, Centre Manager, National Construction Training Centre, Mount Lucas).

The Offaly Minister Pippa Hackett will give the keynote address at this event.

Aisling McElligott, event planner, chose St. Mary’s Youth Centre in the heart of town to host this event.

Organisers felt the youth centre has served the young people of Tullamore so well over the past 56 years, established by Sr Xavier O’Brien who had the vision then, to realise young people of the town needed a place to gather, to talk, to listen and to play.

Said Liam Walsh: “I am pleased to say under Stephen Lawlor (Centre Manager) and his team, the centre continues to thrive, not just hosting the youth of the town and their various activities but providing excellent facilities for business teams and the public to gather in rooms now fully equipped with state of the art facilities.

Mr Walsh said he wishes to thank “Stephen for giving them this opportunity to host this event and thank Sue Adams from “Education for Sustainability”, a non-profit social enterprise, who recently visited some of the secondary schools in Tullamore to create more awareness around sustainability.”
