A man has been arrested after an on-duty member of An Garda Síochana was stabbed during an unprovoked attack in Dublin city centre.

In a statement, issued this Tuesday night, a spokesperson confirmed, the incident happened at around 6pm.

"While on routine high-visibility patrol in the Capel Street area of Dublin 1, a member of An Garda Síochána was subjected to an unprovoked assault by a male. This male was arrested at the scene," they said.

"The member of An Garda Síochána who sustained injuries has been taken to a hospital in Dublin for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries," added the spokesperson

No further information has been disclosed publicly.
In a statement, posted on X, the Minister for Justice, Jim O'Callaghan confirmed described what happened as appalling.
"I’ve been briefed and am receiving updates from An Garda Siochana regarding an appalling attack of a garda on Capel Street today. My thoughts are with the garda and I wish him a full recovery. Attacks on our Gardaí are unacceptable and will never be tolerated," he stated.
The scene of the assault has been preserved and a full investigation has been launched following the violent incident.
The male who was arrested can be detained, without charge, for up to 24 hours.
