Birr Comhaltas are resuming activities after lockdown

THE members of Birr Comhaltas have resumed activities after the prolonged lockdown with their delayed annual general meeting. There was a good attendance and plans were made for the coming year.

In her annual report secretary Laura King reviewed the limited activities which took place over the past two years. The branch members participated in The National Fleadhfest initiative online and the results of their efforts can be viewed on the Fleadhfest Facebook site.

At the invitation of Offaly County Council the members contributed to an open air session in Kinnitty towards the end of the lockdown. The members magazine was distributed, without a break during the pandemic and members were kept up to date on various developments at local and national level.

Notwithstanding the absence of activities, the annual accounts, submitted by treasurer Mary Darcy, showed the branch to be in a sound financial position, mainly due to the success of the National Raffle and the generosity of the members.

Going forward the monthly music sessions will resume on the second Friday of the month, beginning in March at venues to be arranged. The members are holding a gala dinner and music session on Saturday March 26th in Dooly’s Hotel with local and guest artists providing the entertainment. Full details will be announced later.

A piping class with David Kinsella continues in Kinnitty and a full music class, catering for all instruments, will resume in September.

The following officers were elected: Chairman: Michael Naylor, Vice chairman; Pádraig Kinsella, Secretary Laura Smith; Asst. Sec. David Kinsella, Treasurer: Mary Darcy. Youth officer: Miriam O’Neill. Irish Officer; Stella Ní Mháille , PRO; Pádraig Duffy, Auditor: Seán Browne, Delegates to Co. Board: Michael Naylor and Laura Smith. John Carroll is Child Protection Officer.

The meeting noted with regret the recent passing of Paddy Byrne, a loyal member and part of the local singing circle. Sympathies are extended to his family. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
