Borrisokane. Significant works are currently taking place at the town's wastewater treatment plant.
Upgrading work is currently taking place at Borrisokane Wastewater Treatment Plant, which has been welcomed locally because it will mean less risk of storm water flooding.
Planning permission for the upgrading of Borrisokane's Treatment Plant was given last August and construction work at the plant began in December.
Cllr Michael O'Meara welcomed the news during the recent meeting of Nenagh Municipal District.
He pointed out that last Spring a boil water notice was served on the town because of a parasite in the water supply. This problem was subsequently dealt with, prior to the current upgrading work.
Irish Water says that, working in partnership with Tipperary County Council, it's investing €700,000 to undertake essential upgrade works to wastewater treatment plants in towns and villages across Tipperary. These improvement works include upgrades to the storm water management and sludge treatment and storage facilities.
“As part of the project,” said the company in a statement, “upgrade works are proposed to be completed in Borrisokane, Holycross and at Limerick-Junction. The benefits of this upgrading work will include the following:
Upgrading the existing infrastructure at the plants and providing new elements where defects identified; improve the performance of the wastewater treatment process; prolong the operational life of the existing plant; reduce the risk of storm water flooding; ensure compliance with Urban Wastewater Treatment Regulations 2001; install new storm water holding tanks for the plants; upgrade the sludge storage, thickening and sludge dewatering and drying facilities at the plants; works will be carried out within the footprint of the plants, therefore minimising disruption to residents and businesses in the surrounding area.”
