A PEACEFUL fuel protest was held in Cloghan today (Thursday the 9th) with just one side of the road blocked by traffic, allowing ease of passage for all road users and contradicting the sometimes false narratives that in other parts of the country the protests were sometimes impeding the emergency services going about their important jobs.
In Cloghan there was only the very slightest hold up for commuters. Many passers by honked their horns in support of the
protest and some shouted encouragement from their vehicles.
The protest lined the Shannonbridge road, main street and the main Athlone road into the busy village.
Locals taking part in the all day protest, starting from 7 in the morning, told The Midland Tribune they would be there for as long as it would take to solve the acute problem of very high oil prices which, they said, could very well put them out of business.
The Midland Tribune saw that the traffic flowed easily through the village during the protest. Some protesters were even helping traffic to get through, including an ambulance which arrived and drove easily through, with no difficulty.
There was great goodwill from the local business people and they provided the protesters with sandwiches, hot food and tea.
Ferbane man Niall Moore (pictured below; photo by Rose Mannion) even brought along his fold up bed, in preparation for staying for the long haul.
