Church celebrations and book launch in Rathcabbin Church

The last five surviving members of the twelve people committee that was formed for the building of Rathcabbin Church.

BISHOP of Killaloe, Fintan Monahan, will visit Rathcabbin this Sunday to celebrate the official launch of a book marking the 40th anniversary of the construction of the village's new church, as well as an extensive social history of the wider area of Dorrha.

The 130-page book, “The Soul of Dorrha, The Spirit of Rathcabbin”, will be launched at Our Lady Queen of Ireland Church in Rathcabbin this Sunday (November 23rd). All are invited to the ceremony, at which the book will be for sale for the first time. Proceedings will start with a 40th anniversary Mass at 11.30am, followed by the official launch of the book by guest speaker Damien O'Meara of RTE.

The book is the culmination of research and writing since the start of this year. It captures the extraordinary story of the construction of the new church in Rathcabbin in 1984, including the remarkable fundraising efforts which saw the building, which cost over £300,000, emerge with a small surplus which went towards refurbishments at the parish's schools.

As well as the history of the church in Rathcabbin village and wider area of Dorrha, this book also includes chapters about Dorrha through the Middle Ages and into modern times. It also serves as an extensive social history with chapters about agriculture, education, drama, Tidy Towns, GAA and Camogie, local business and more.
