The High Street N.S. school community hosted a retirement function recently for its principal Mrs. Kay Egan, following 31 years of teaching including 21 years as principal.

Kay, a native of Ballinasloe, came to High Street in 1991. Kay became an integral part of the High Street school community, marrying locally and raising her own family in the area.

Kay’s family, pupils, past and present, colleagues and parents gathered in High Street community hall to acknowledge her contribution to the education of the children in the community over her long career.

The pupils enjoyed music, dancing and refreshments. This was followed by a presentation to Kay from the students, Parents Association and Board of Management.

Speeches were made by Mr. Donal Kenny (Chairman on the Board of Management), Mrs. Carmel Ferris (newly appointed principal) and Mrs. Louise Kelly (Board of Management.

They spoke of Kay’s many improvements to the school, as she worked with staff, B.O.M., P.A., parents and outside agencies in various projects including; the removal of asbestos, renovations including the replacement of windows, furniture and flooring, the purchasing of the adjoining field which extended the play area, car park and created a new turning area, thus increasing safety.  The old flat roof was replaced with a new, apex one and a canopy was installed.

Kay joined with the community in preparations for the school’s Silver Jubilee.

Kay was quietly working evenings and weekends “behind the scenes”, as was her way.

At all times, when it came to making management decisions, Kay’s focus centred on what was best for the pupils. Kay went out of her way, to foster a special relationship with each child.

The pupils also lined out in the school yard to bid farewell to their principal, having decorated the school and community hall in handmade posters and decorations.

Kay will miss all in the school community greatly, but most especially the pupils who brought such blessings to her life.

The pupils, staff and school community wish Kay a long, happy and relaxing retirement.

Go n-éirí an bothar leí i gcónaí.
