Last year Roscrea based Garda Sergeant Ciarán O’Ráighne cycled almost 250km in aid of the Alzheimers Society of Ireland and the people of Roscrea helped him raise over €30,000.

Last year, in tandem with the cycle there was a coffee morning in in association with Age Friendly Roscrea and although this year there was no cycle local Gardaí led by Sgt. O'Ráighne, teamed up with Age Friendly again and held a very successful Alzheimer’s Tea Day last Monday in the Courthouse.

Tipperary's Rose of Tralee contestant, Tara Brady from Ballina and local people came out to support the great cause. Both Sgt. O'Ráighne and Tara Brady have family members affected by memory loss.

“It was wonderful to see the community of Roscrea come out to support this good cause. All of us know someone living with memory loss and see the care that their family and friends give on a 24hr basis”, Age Friendly Roscrea's  Project Co-ordinator, Mary McMahon, told the Tribune.

“Sgt. Ciarán O’Ráighne co-hosted the event with us and we would like to thank him and all his colleagues for their support on the day.

Sgt. O'Ráighne raised over €30k last year through the sponsored 'Making Memories Cycle' for the Alzheimer’s Society. In August  he completed a one-day solo 236km cycle from Indreabhán in County Galway to Dingle in County Kerry.

He chose the  route because he is from the small parish where the cycle begins in Indreabhán and his mother Máire is from Ventry near the end point of the cycle in Dingle.

The Alzheimer Society offers supports to families with respite care, day service and their home care and day care at home.

David Kieran is the Dementia Advisor for North Tipperary and is happy to call to you to discuss service needs or give advice on any worries you may have and can be reached at (087) 913 7520.

Age Friendly's next Courthouse Café will be on Wednesday, May 29 at 11am in the Courthouse. This is an opportunity for people living with memory loss and/or their carers to meet and chat about their lived experience and how they are coping.

There will be speakers on various services offering advice and support. All are welcome to attend.
