Offaly spots included in list of 'walks every Irish person must try'
Two Offaly routes have been included in a list compiled by lovin.ie of the 22 walks every Irish person must try.
With scenic routes from right across the country included, it is remarkable that two walks through Offaly have made the cut.
First up is the Slieve Blooms and their various mountain trails coming in at No. 10. They describe it as, "a walk that is so good it'll take you across two different counties. Again you have a choice of several walks including looped tracks. Something for people of all standards here."
Next on the list is the Grand Canal way which takes walkers, runners and cyclists across half of the country from Dublin right into Offaly and the Midlands.
Lovin.ie wrote: "Dubliners will be well familiar with walking parts of the canal but not everybody knows that you can following it for miles into the midlands. Great cycling options too and walking back into the city after getting dropped off as far out as you can manage is a wonderful experience."
These walks are known to many in Offaly and the Midlands but may be described as hidden gems to those not from these parts. News recently that the grand canal greenway has received a €200,000 go ahead to pave a section from Edenderry to Tullamore will also be welcomed by those wishing to avail of the amenity.
