Edenderry GAA looks set to play host to one of the world's most famous singers for a series of open-air concert in the summer of 2020, the Offaly Express can reveal.

The ambitious Offaly club confirmed that they are in talks with promoters after their new Weaver's Field pitch and the sizeable piece of surrounding land was identified as a potential large-scale event space.

The identity of the star is currently being kept under wraps with the club itself even being kept in the dark to date.

"We can confirm talks but if you're looking for a name, we simply can't give it to you," club chairman David Farrell said.

"We've been informed that the individual is known internationally and that they are planning multiple dates on the site with around 20,000 capacity each night," he said.

Edenderry GAA have been working on permission for the event with an official application to be lodged with Offaly County Council as early as next week in order for "all the kinks to be worked out" before the end of the year, according to Farrell.

"It might sound off the wall to some people but we've always been an ambitious club and we have the space to accommodate an event of this nature on our new site at Weaver's Field," he explained.

It's understood talks are progressing well with nearby landowners.

While Offaly County Council has not commented as of yet, the idea of Offaly as a whole becoming "an events hub" in the wake of the National Ploughing Championship leaving for Carlow was proposed by numerous councillors at a recent members' meeting.

"The ploughing is a fine example of events on this scale being held in the county, and these concerts could be the litmus test for Edenderry to follow the example of Tullamore," David Farrell remarked.

An official update on the likelihood of the concerts going ahead is expected before the end of the summer, at which point the identity of the star would be revealed.
