THE hugely popular Tullamore half marathon will double as the national championship for the second time.

Sponsored once again by Bord na Mona, the race will be hosted by Tullamore Harriers on Saturday, August 30 – taking the capacity field of 1,400 runners on a testing but fair loop on country roads out through Mucklagh, down the Ross Road to Ballinacanty Cross, into Killurin and finishing in the Harriers’ famed stadium.

Inaugurated in 2013, it has become a stable for many runners apart from 2020 and 2021 when Covid 19 forced its cancellation. It has become increasingly popular and its profile was further enhanced when it was chosen as the National Half Marathon Championship two years ago.

The national championships are returning there this year and that will ensure some very good athletes take to the line. Many of them won’t confirm their intentions until nearer the time but the presence of one of Ireland’s top athletes, David Gillick is a boost.

A 400 metre specialist in his prime, Gillick has begun to take on endurance distances since his competitive career ended and he has raced a marathon and other long distance events.

It is now one of the most popular events on the Irish endurance calendar and its popularity was shown when this year’s event sold out within weeks of going live.

Tullamore Harriers AC is very appreciative of the continued support from Offaly County Council, Tullamore Gardaí, Offaly Civil Defence, sponsors, supporters and the many volunteers who make the event possible.

The race starts at 10am on the Charleville Road at the junction with Dillon Street. Runners will be on the course until approximately 1:30pm. For the safety of all participants, temporary road closures will be in place along the route, and the club thanks the public in advance for their cooperation.
